The book includes a biographical record of Penleigh’s life, as well as that of his wife, Edith, and their two sons, John (Pat) and Robin. It has numerous works of art by Penleigh and by his parents, Emma Minnie Boyd and Arthur Merric Boyd. It also includes works by Edith, whose art has not been published before. It records his wartime experiences in Europe and the events leading to his tragic death, aged 33 years.
Other important works by Penleigh are reproduced in Sunlight and Storm The Life and Art of Penleigh Boyd. These include a complete reproduction of his book Salvage: Pictures and Impressions of the Western Front, reproductions of letters he sent to his family in Australia while on military service, a thorough record of his involvement in The European Art Exhibition for Australia which he organized and curated, and a wide selection of news articles from Australian newspapers which reflect his popularity as an Australian painter.
