Merric Boyd and Murrumbeena:

The Life of an Artist in a Time and a Place

Cover of 'Merric Boyd and Murrumbeena: The Life of an Artist' by Colin Smith, a 458 page book featuring a soft pastel landscape of man and bridge with the book title.

Published in 2013 and reprinted in 2014, this is a 458-page hard cover and thread-bound book, printed in Singapore.

Twenty-five years in the making, this book offers a unique view of Merric Boyd’s life in Murrumbeena. There, he spent most of his life and created almost all of his remarkable pottery. The book includes a history of Murrumbeena and of Merric Boyd’s life there, as well as his life prior to arriving in the area in 1913. It contains many works of art by Boyd family members and their recollections of Murrumbeena life. It features dozens of recollections of the family by their friends and associates through the years, recalling times, places and events from the 1910s to the 1960s. Through these, we see both Merric developing as a potter and sculptor, and ageing as a man impacted by time and epilepsy.

Merric Boyd and Murrumbeena includes a set of remarkable drawings by David Boyd of Open Country and of Wahroongaa Crescent as it changed over the decades with his family’s residence there.

The bulk of Merric Boyd and Murrumbeena is built upon the memories and recollections of the Boyds and of the people who knew them. Almost all of these people are now deceased. Through this book however, their stories can be told and shared, giving unique insights in the life of Merric Boyd and of his family in Murrumbeena, and of life in Australia in a bygone era.

This book has an RRP of $49.95, is distributed by Peribo and is available online and at selected bookshops.
